Meteora, Greece a mystical, magical place.

This painting was a bit challenging – was working from a photo by Emily Beyer, my daughter-in-law, they traveled for a year before returning to the states to live.

The photo was taken at Meteora, Greece. It struck me as a magical as well as mystical location simply from the photo. I just had to paint it.

The piece was finished a few days ago and I have had to swiftly prepare the piece for a show at the Society of Western Artists in San Bruno.

It was so close; I had a window from 10:00 – 1:00 pm. This Saturday morning, so I headed into the studio to fill out the paperwork for the piece. I’ll know sometime next few days if the painting was accepted.

The following is an excerpt from Wikipedia; the stone forest of Meteora is a perfect combination of natural and man-made landscape, practical inducing a sense of the transcendent. Visitors come here either to feel the aura of the contemplative seclusion of monastic life, and admire a truly unique natural landscape or to marvel at the out standing architecture of the monasteries, the so-called architecture of awe.

In 1988 Meteora was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Sight.
